Invisalign is a great orthodontic treatment option for adults, teenagers and even kids. The Invisalign process uses a series of clear plastic trays that gradually move the teeth into alignment. If you’re worried about your child being the only one of their peers in orthodontic treatment, you can rest assured they will not be alone! In fact, according to the American Association of Orthodontists, there are approximately 3.9 million child orthodontic patients in the United States. Unsure if your child is ready for Invisalign treatment? Read on for indications that your child is ready for Invisalign.
Your child may exhibit mild dental issues that need correction such as overcrowded, protruding, or crooked teeth. If your child has crowded teeth, it can be difficult for them to eat and speak clearly. Overcrowding can also lead to tooth decay and gum disease as it makes maintaining good oral health more difficult. In addition, your kid’s teeth may crowd if they bite down hard on food.
Your child must have a sense of accountability when it comes to their own oral health. They should exhibit responsibility when it comes to thoroughly brushing and flossing their own teeth. This will set the foundation for their orthodontic treatment. If they are not diligent in cleaning their teeth, food particles can build up and lead to plaque, cavities, and more.
Your child is ready to begin Invisalign treatment when they are responsible and prepared to commit to the process. They will need to remove their aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water, and they must replace them immediately afterward. They must also be sure to wear their aligners for at least 22 hours each day, otherwise treatment will likely last much longer than predicted. Such responsibility requires discipline and maturity.
When your child has grown all their permanent teeth, they are ready for Invisalign treatment. If your child is still in the process of losing baby teeth, it is too early to consider Invisalign treatment.
