What to Do If One of Your Braces Brackets Falls Off

Posted on September 26, 2023

If you wear braces, you’re not alone. One of the issues that can happen with braces is that the brackets fall off. While this isn’t something that you want to happen, it does happen regularly. If this happens to you, you may wonder what you should do. Here are important steps to follow.

Clean and Save the Bracket

If a bracket falls off, you want to try to clean it and save it. Lay the bracket on a flat, clean surface, and then use a toothbrush to gently clean the bracket, removing food particles. From there, place it in a small snack or sandwich bag to prevent it from getting lost.

Trim Any Poking Wires

After the bracket falls off, there may be loose wires from the braces. If possible, try to use your orthodontic wax to coat the wires and prevent them from poking you. However, if they do poke you, and it’s uncomfortable, you can trim them. You can use nail clippers to gently trim the wires and prevent them from irritating. Try to trim as little as possible and only trim if it’s absolutely necessary for your comfort.

Contact Your Orthodontist

Having braces brackets fall off is a good reason to give your orthodontist a call. Depending on how busy they are and how far out your next appointment is scheduled for, they may want you to come in and have the bracket repaired. If you’re experiencing pain or irritation from wires protruding, be sure to let the office know, so they can get you in to be seen as soon as possible.

Be Mindful About What You Eat

If you have a missing bracket, you need to be more mindful of what you eat. Try to eat softer foods until the bracket can be repaired, so you don’t cause any further damage to your braces.

The most common reasons why braces brackets can fall off are because the brackets weren’t tightened well, you ate food you shouldn’t have, you brushed or flossed too vigorously, or you have missed appointments with your orthodontist.
